Schoolhouse of Wonder has been rooted in Durham, North Carolina since 1989. We offer many of our programs within West Point on the Eno Park where the Eno River, forest, meadows, and historic buildings provide a lush setting for learning. Learning within such magical spaces allows youth and adults to directly experience how the natural world and human tradition have intermingled throughout history. We offer a variety of interactive outdoor programs for all ages, ranging in length from one-day to five-days. Our programs focus on the natural and cultural history of this region with particular attention to wilderness awareness and community building skills.
Schoolhouse of Wonder provides hands-on environmental and cultural history education at West Point on the Eno City Park. Our teaching staff provides one-day field trip programs for elementary students, on-going mentoring programs for homeschooled students, year-round day camps for youth and teens, and special mentoring programs and leadership opportunities for teens. We also provide in-school residencies and workshops for elementary students through the Durham Arts Council's CAPS program.
Schoolhouse of Wonder staff also offers learning opportunities for adults. On-going wilderness skill group meetings, and weekend-long wilderness skills workshop are available. Please visit our website for more information about all of these exciting offerings!
While our educational programs are for scheduled audiences, the public is invited to visit Schoolhouse of Wonder's organic teaching garden anytime the park is open. West Point on the Eno City Park in Durham is open from 8AM-dusk. Our organic garden is located just behind the historic McCown-Mangum farmhouse.

MissionOur mission is to stimulate learning by providing opportunities for direct experience with nature for the people of the North Carolina Piedmont so they can develop a lifelong appreciation of, and respect for, the region's history and the environment.
Cost of Programs/AdmissionFees vary by program, and Schoolhouse of Wonder programs are for scheduled audiences only. West Point on the Eno City Park, however, is open daily for the public at no charge.
FeaturesWest Point on the Eno, a natural and historic city park, is located along a two-mile stretch of the scenic Eno River, six miles north of downtown Durham. The 371 acres of woods, waters, and wildlife have changed little in the centuries since this area was the home of the Shocco, Adshusheer, and Eno Indians. This river valley was also attractive to the first white settlers, primarily farmers and millers, who arrived in the 1750's to earn their livelihood. Nearly 1.5 miles of trails now wind through the park, along the river and through rocky terrain covered with mountain laurel, rhododendron, and partridgeberry. A variety of flowers, ferns and shrubs indigenous to the mountains are also found here. This city park is open to the public, free of charge, from 8AM-dusk.
AccessibilityOur outdoor programs can be adjusted to accommodate students with limited mobility.
